BIGGIE SMALLS BY EDDIE OTCHERE - GOLD HAND PRINT (SIGNED) - SOLD OUT
In spring 1995 Otchere and the Powermoves crew woke Biggie in his hotel room and twenty minutes later - dressed in Coogi, Versace and Kangol – he was captured in a car park against a West London skyline. The portrait of Biggie was originally shot on colour negative. Otchere took nine shots of Biggie on that day, framed by urban London; rail tracks in the distance and the March sun directly behind him. The image reconfigured in the Dark Edition was frame six of that nine, the iconic picture that was sampled by Shepherd Fairey/Obey in his rendition of Biggie.
The Notorious B.I.G. Dark Edition is printed as a photogravure etching on a Rochat 26” press*, sandwiched between a two-layer screenprint. The first layer of the print is Rich Pale Gold, pulled through an open screen. This acts as a pre-flash, bringing out iridescent detail in the highlights of the image. The portrait of Biggie is an etching made from lithographic film, exposed from the original negative and rendered in Bone Black & Warm Red inks to create a warm tone black akin to the tonal qualities of 19th century photography. Finally, a stencilled screen in Carbon Black & Vermillion frames the print. The Notorious B.I.G. Dark Edition is printed on Somerset Tub Size Satin 310gsm in White and presented with torn or deckled edges, 17’' x 25'’ (40.5cm x 54.5cm).
This quintessential image of the Notorious B.I.G. comes from an edition of 4 prints and is on display for 1 day only in Paris, Los Angeles and Brixton on the 21st May (Biggie’s birthday).
- The Harry F Rochat 26” model press is based on the Haddon Etching Press and was first put into production in the late 1800s. The current model, still painted in the traditional RAF Blue Grey (obtained by Harry F Rochat as a job lot after leaving the RAF) was built in 1985-87, to the original design first put into production by the late Harry F Rochat.
